The Alliance française around the world and in France

The Alliance française is a name, label, identity, and history which goes beyond the borders of France.
This worldwide cultural network was founded 130 years ago by great scientist, historical and literary figures Louis Pasteur, Ferdinand de Lesseps, Jules Verne, Ernest Renan and Armand Colin, and is coordinated by the Alliance française Foundation (la Fondation Alliance française).
813 Alliances françaises can be found in 136 countries. There are forty general delegations, with over 538 000 students altogether.
These organisations are independently run franchises that follow the local law - the French legal system in France, the Chinese legal system in China, the American legal system in the USA… They share the same democratic values, respect for others, humanism, and work towards the same goal, i.e. supporting the French language and the French and francophone cultures in the towns and regions where they are established.
In France, 17 Alliances françaises teach French : Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Grenoble, Rouen, Strasbourg, Nice, Vendôme, Paris, Le Havre, Dijon, Biarritz, Montpellier… and the last-born of the family : Lille !
