Lille is a city of art and history, a university town and a cultural centre. It was the European capital of culture in 2004.
It is situated at the crossroads of capitals and large cities of Northern and Western Europe : one hour train from Paris, London and Brussels, and two hours from Amsterdam, Cologne and Frankfort.
Its cultural wealth makes it one of the most beautiful cities in France. You won’t miss the chance to enrich yourself culturally and to enjoy strolling down the streets of Lille’s Old Town, drinking a good beer in front of the Cathedral Notre-Dame de la Treille, or tasting the traditional moules-frites (mussels and chips) next to the Rihour Palace. You will also have the opportunity to visit France’s beautiful museums such as the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille, la Piscine (art and industry museum) in Roubaix, le LaM in Villeneuve d’Ascq and even the recently established Louvre in Lens. Grand-Place and Vieille Bourse (old bourse), jewels of Lille, attest to its past as an important business location similarly to its Flemish competitors Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. The opera house, théâtre du Nord and théâtre Sebastopol offer a large number of cultural events throughout the year. Les Maisons Folies and Gare St-Sauveur, té&ahe city’s major industrial centres, have been rehabilitated to welcome contemporary culture, be it urban or digital, in order to make it accessible to everyone.
To keep fit after having tasted Potjevleesch (a pork, rabbit, chicken and veal casserole) or chicons au gratin (oven-baked chicory rolled in ham with béchamel sauce), there is nothing better than jogging nearby the Vauban citadel, riding your bike along the canals, or even, if time permits, trying out land sailing - also known as sand yachting - on the vast fine sandy beaches of the Côte d’Opale.
